ESSAY QUESTION: ‘The stereotype is a complex, ambivalent, contradictory mode of representation, as anxious as it is assertive, and demands not only that we extend our critical and political objectives but that we change the object of analysis itself’ (Bhabha 1994: 70). Examine this quotation and exemplify your answer with reference to one or two of the films studied.

The essay should not be entirely focused on one/two films, they do need to be referenced but the main focus is on the concept of ”stereotype”

Some of the films studied: (choose 1 or 2)

-The Three Caballeros (Walt Disney 1945)

-Carmen Miranda, Bananas Is My Business (Solberg 1995)

-María Candelaria (Fernández 1943)

Recommended readings that are on the internet but that I have not been able to attach here are:

-The location of culture by Homi K. Bhabha 1994 (The chapter you need to read is: ‘The Other Question. Stereotype, discrimination and the discourse of Colonialism’) (ESSENTIAL for the essay)

-The Three Caballeros: Pato Donald’s gender ducking by José Piedra (ALSO VERY ESSENTIAL)

-Categorizing the Other: Stereotypes and Stereotyping in Latino Images in Film: Stereotypes, Subversion, & Resistance
Chapter by Charles Ramírez Berg.

-Ramírez Berg, C. (2002), ‘Categorizing the Other: Stereotypes and Stereotyping’, in Latino Images in Film: Stereotypes, Subversion, & Resistance (Austin: University of Texas Press), pp. 13-37

-Tuñón, J. (2003), ‘María Candelaria’, in Elena, A. and Díaz, M. (eds.), The Cinema of Latin America (24 Frames) (New York: Columbia University Press), pp. 45-52.

The essay should include footnote references to secondary sources (which must be mainly non-internet based) and a bibliography of all works consulted (the bibliography is excluded from the final word count).

Remember this is a UK essay.
