Compare Sappho and Sulpicia, as the only two female poets we have any substantial works from. How much can we tell about their societies and what it means to be a woman in their communities from these poems? Do we see ways that there are similarities between their style, subject matter, and tone (besides the obvious fact that they are both women)? This should involve a close reading of the texts – surface readings and comparisons are not sufficient.
If you like, you can include what little we have from Nossis, Corinna, Praxilla, Erinna, and these other epigrams by women.
