1. Define and describe the Turner Thesis. What does it accurately say? What does it lack? How did John F.  Kennedy use it in his campaign and what did he mean by it?   Either literally or metaphorically, what could be the Frontier today?   2. President Grant was in office for 8 years, from March 1869 to March 1877. Describe an event or series of events that occurred while he was President in each of the following areas of our study: the South (the former Confederate states), industry and/or business, the West, the Grant administration itself, in politics.( Notes, (Chs. 15, 16, 17)
  3. Name the three Reconstruction Amendments and explain what each meant; then, name the four Progressive Amendments the tell what each of them meant. (Book 838-40; notes in two places).
  4. Explain social Darwinism and how the entrepreneurs such as Rockefeller and Carnegie applied it to themselves. (notes, text 412-15; 449-50)
  5. Compare the contributions of Booker T. Washington, W. E. B. Dubois, and George Washington Carver to the development of African American society and to American society as a whole. ( Notes, 373, 502 Carver is only in the notes.)
  6. Explain the many ways the railroads influenced America. Relate this to Peter Drucker’s comparison of the industrial revolution with the information revolution. (much in the notes, Chapters 15, 16, and 17.
  7. In how many ways do Edison’s inventions affect our lives (yours and mine) today. (Notes,405-06; 446 in text).
  8. In what ways did women advance in the late 19th and early 20th centuries? (notes/text 452; 491-96)
  9. How were Progressive and populist origins and platforms (ideas) similar, and how were they different? (notes; text, Chs. 19/20)
  10. What were the main events in American foreign policy under McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt? Were Americans being imperialists or doing good? Give some examples and explain. (notes; text Chapter 21, 519-22.)
  11. Alternate question (or bonus up to 5 points) What was the immediate cause of World War I, describe the European alliances before WWI and how they reacted and declared war after the incident which triggered everything. What were its ultimate effects (results) of the war? (Notes)
