FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012
By the time of the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 was passed, the aviation industry needed innovation on many fronts. From acceleration of NextGen technologies to addressing necessary improvements to pilot licensing, the act covered many topics. Probably the most significant area requiring the attention of the FAA through this act was the integration of civil unmanned aircraft systems into National Airspace (NAS).
With the growing number of Consumer Off The Shelf (COTS) drones with imagery payloads being used by people within the NAS, a comprehensive plan to establish a regulatory framework in efforts to ensure safety of operations and maintain privacy of U.S. citizens. Today, we see the continuous evolution of FAA UAS regulations in attempts to keep up with the endless improvements of COTS drone technology and increased capabilities.
