Activity – Answer the following questions, using sentence, paragraph structure, correct grammer and spelling:

A) Approximately how many light fixtures and light bulbs are in your household (interior only)?

B) How many of those light fixtures can actually physically be fitted with a compact fluorescent light bulb OR LED type? How many CFL or LED bulbs do you already utilize in your household?

C) Add up the total listed wattage of all the lights in your household. If you turned on all your lights at once, how much energy would you be roughly be consuming? How many Kilowatt hours does this represent [1000 watts = 1 Kilowatt].

D) Look up the average energy consumption for a refrigerator or dishwasher or washing machine or electric hot water heater. How much energy do they consume? How many electrical devices do you have plugged in at any one time (whether on/off or on stand-by)? If you have access to a utility bill, find out what is your daily or monthly average?

E) Get up in the middle of the night (DO NOT TURN ON ANY LIGHTS!) and go around your household and “see” all those standby lights and illuminated digital displays? These are referred to as current vampires, the device is OFF, but it is sucking current – 24/7! How many current vampires do you have in your household?

F) Even if you don’t see or realize the potential economic savings through conservation or increased efficiency, why is it important to consider using compact fluorescent or LED lighting in place of incandescent or replacing old appliances with more energy efficient ones (EnergyStar certified ones) good for the environment?

G) What are some of the potential downside or negative aspects of compact fluorescent and/or LED bulbs for practical usage and environmental? Think in terms of your readings in Conundrum. Why is switching to compact fluorescents and LED not in itself going to solve the energy consumption problem? (HINT: Prius Fallacy) Why are compact flourescent bulbs falling out of favour with the consumers?

H) What could you do in you household or home or apartment to utilize less energy and thus lower your energy/carbon footprint?
