Andrea Yates:
Andrea Yates confessed to drowning her 5 children in their bathtub in 2001. She suffered from
severe postpartum depression and psychosis. She was convicted of capital murder but
sentenced to life in prison with parole after 40 years. The verdict was overturned on appeal.
In 2006 a jury found her not guilty by reason of insanity (NGI or NGRI) and she was committed
to a mental hospital.
Was the verdict of NGI appropriate? Should she have been found sane and sent to prison? Or
was the verdict appropriate due to her mental issues?
